A trip to Japan isn't complete without a stay in a traditional Japanese inn called a ryokan 旅館. I have stayed at the Hiraiwa 平岩 inn 3 times and I would recommend it. The hosts are warm and friendly and ensure everyone has a comfortable stay. My only tip would be to take your own coffee/tea into the dining room as choice is minimal. The ryokan is about a 15 minute walk to Kyoto Station and about a 10 minute walk to the main shopping district. The ryokan has a traditional Japanese bath as well as individual showers. Each room has a tv and tea making facilities. Sleeping on a futon is always an experience for students and wearing the ゆかた adds to the excitement.

The ゆかた is such a novelty! I tried mine on in my little hotel room and took a picture, feeling stupid but then at breakfast the next morning, there were at least 15 of us that had done the same thing! Also had the chance to wear a 着物 which was great! It was my host mum`s from a long long time ago she tells me! My feet are way to large to fit into the Japanese sandals, i forget what they are called!
